Doctor of Philosophy The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the University's principal research degree for graduate students and is available in all faculties and departments. A Cambridge PhD is intellectually demanding and you will need to have a high level of attainment and motivation to pursue this programme of advanced study and research.
When you have submitted your thesis, it will be examined jointly by two experts in the relevant area, one of them from Cambridge, one from another university, and discussed orally at a viva with the two examiners. Many successful theses go on to become the basis for significant publications.
Please note that the SU buiding is closed until further notice. T his extends to the Print Shop including our thesis binding service. If you have a thesis due for collection from J.S. Wilson, you will need to collect this from them.For future binding needs, they will be remaining open.
Research Proposals. The following remarks are intended to help those applying for a place to study for the PhD, as well as those applying for a place on one of the Faculty’s MPhil courses. They are also intended to help with subsequent applications to funding bodies.
For a few applicants, The MPhil in Film and Screen Studies by Thesis may be preferrable. This course is for students who already have a substantial level of familiarity with the study of film and literary texts in the relevant culture, and who already know the area they wish to research for their thesis.
The thesis shall not exceed 18,000 words including footnotes and appendices, but excluding bibliography. It shall be on a topic approved by the Faculty Board falling within the field of the subject. 5. '3' indicates a subject in which a three-hour final examination is required, the candidate having no option of substituting a thesis or a two-hour examination and an essay.
